Background
Founded in 2012 by two educators in Fort Myers, Florida, De LaSalle Academy serves a critical niche: students with special needs who don’t qualify for state-funded services but struggle in mainstream classrooms. Enrolling around 150 students and staffed by 40 faculty members, De LaSalle focuses on small class sizes and individual attention that help learners thrive both academically and socially.
As the school evolved, so did its need for robust campus security. The administration wanted to protect against external threats and ensure that faculty could keep an eye on student transitions—especially important for learners needing extra support. Initially, about 10 Axis cameras covered select hallways and entrances, but limited storage and spotty coverage left significant blind spots. Searching for a more scalable, cost-effective solution, De LaSalle Academy chose UniFi Protect.
Business Objectives
- Complete Campus Coverage De LaSalle sought to move beyond minimal, scattered surveillance toward an all-encompassing security strategy. With students frequently transitioning between classes (often outdoors), it was essential to have a clear view of corridors, playground areas, and building exteriors.
- Privacy & Data Control Serving minors comes with added responsibility around data handling. Administrators wanted local storage—no cloud—and they insisted on cameras without audio recording to align with parental preferences and state regulations. The goal was to capture only what was necessary to keep students and staff safe.
- Budget-Friendly Expansion Like many private schools, De LaSalle operates within tight financial constraints. They needed a system that would reduce recurring costs and offer an easy path to expand or upgrade without forcing additional licensing fees.
