Across these diverse gatherings, attendees expect seamless connectivity that lets them share videos, post on social media, and stay updated in real time.

Overseeing the venue’s network is no small feat. With up to 9,000 fans connecting simultaneously during peak events, FedExForum’s IT staff must deliver robust, high-density Wi-Fi while also handling wired connections for media, security scanners, and point-of-sale systems. “We never know what each event requires until show day—we have to adapt quickly and easily,” says Darrell DeRosia, Sr. Director, Network & Infrastructure Services for the Grizzlies.

## Business Objectives

1. **High-Density Wireless Performance**
The primary goal at FedExForum is to ensure that everyone—fans, vendors, production crews—experiences consistent and high-speed connectivity, no matter the size or nature of the event. “If our Wi-Fi lags, it hurts the fan experience,” Darrell says. “We want it to be seamless so it doesn’t even cross their minds.”

2. **Flexible Network Configurations**
Different events bring diverse technical requests. A touring concert might require dedicated VLANs for streaming; a sports broadcast might need robust, low-latency wired connections to feed 4K camera signals. The team must be ready to pivot configurations rapidly between NBA games, bull-riding events, or major concerts.

3. **Reliable Core with Minimal Downtime**
FedExForum is operational around the clock. Beyond game nights, employees use the space for rehearsals, vendor setup, maintenance, and administrative work. The network must sustain crucial functions like ticketing, security checkpoints, and broadcast coverage. Because the arena cannot simply pause operations, segmentation ensures that individual sections can be  updated or replaced without impacting the entire facility.

## Why UniFi

**Enterprise-Ready Scale**
FedExForum selected UniFi for its capacity to manage thousands of concurrent connections. “The Enterprise Fortress Gateway (EFG) was the largest gateway at the time, and it meets our requirement of getting 5,000-plus people online with no hiccups,” Darrell explains.

High-density environments often demand extreme throughput, so the IT team provisions multiple 10 Gbps circuits from different ISPs (Comcast and Verizon). NAT pooling further helps prevent port exhaustion when thousands of devices simultaneously try to connect.

**High-Density Wi-Fi and Intelligent RF**
Arenas present complex RF environments: large open spaces, thousands of bodies blocking signals, and multi-level seating. FedExForum’s bowl uses a combination of  UWB XGS (Wi-Fi 5, triple 5 GHz radios) and newer E7 Audience APs that add 6 GHz spectrum and pave the way for Wi-Fi 7. The older UWB XGS still delivers reliable performance, while the E7 Audience is already relieving congestion by offering more channels.

**Line of Sight and Under-Seat Coverage**
In lower bowl sections, APs mount just below the scoreboard. “Line of sight is king in high-density Wi-Fi,” Darrell notes. This approach minimizes interference since fewer spectators block signals. Meanwhile, certain levels incorporate under-seat access points to ensure strong coverage, placing them every 50 to 70 seats.

**Sophisticated Channel Planning**
Proper channel reuse is essential in a large venue. The team sets minimum RSSI thresholds, uses color-coded channel striping, and leverages the 6 GHz band to increase overall capacity. Current testing shows around 1.6 Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput during peak times, and the additional 6 GHz spectrum is expected to double or even triple that figure as more clients adopt newer devices.

**Integrated Switching for Seamless Power and Aggregation**
UniFi’s switching infrastructure complements the arena’s high-density Wi-Fi deployment. As new devices proliferate, FedExForum anticipates an uptick in Wi-Fi 7 clients. Although many fans currently use Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 devices, the E7 Audience APs can already broadcast on 6 GHz to give early adopters a significant performance boost. The team limits certain SSIDs on these APs to avoid overloading them with legacy devices, but has observed speeds of 500 to 600 Mbps even in crowded conditions.

**Maintenance Windows and Segmentation**
Because FedExForum operates nearly 24/7, scheduling downtime is tricky. The UniFi architecture lets IT isolate sub-networks for updates while keeping others fully functional. Ticketing, security scanners, and broadcast operations remain online if only a specific portion of the network is being upgraded. This segmentation strategy helps maintain reliability for critical services during firmware updates or hardware swaps.

When the popular US-based Five Guys burger chain decided to expand across the United Kingdom and into Europe, they had a clear vision: maintain the same great customer experience in every location, from Covent Garden in London all the way to Germany, France, and Spain. For Five Guys, this meant not just the same menu or decor, but also reliable in-store technology that could handle everything from employee check-in and point-of-sale (POS) systems to third-party delivery kiosks.

[Twilight Zone Engineering](https://www.twilightzone.co.uk/), led by founder Paul Mintern, has served as Five Guys’ IT partner in the UK for over a decade. Paul’s team provides support and project management to ensure each restaurant runs efficiently. “We act as the IT department,” Paul says. “And for a quick-service restaurant chain with hundreds of sites, you have to ensure Wi-Fi, switches, and gateways just work—seamlessly, every day, in every store.”

When Five Guys decided to unify their networking hardware under a single vendor, they turned to UniFi for an integrated, license-free platform that could meet the demands of a fast-paced, high-turnover environment.

1. **Consistency Across 250+ Sites.** With each new store opening or existing store refresh, Five Guys wanted a standardized, repeatable network stack. Prior to UniFi, they’d used a mix of Ruckus wireless, Cisco switches, and other legacy solutions. This patchwork resulted in higher costs and more complexity. “A big factor for us was delivering a uniform setup,” Paul notes. “When we can replicate the same hardware and design across every location, troubleshooting becomes easier, performance is more predictable, and staff training is minimal. That was top of mind.”
2. **Simplified Remote Management.** With hundreds of stores spread across the UK—and more across France, Spain, and Germany—Five Guys needed a centralized management solution to monitor performance, push configurations, and troubleshoot issues. Site visits for every minor adjustment would be expensive and disruptive. “Because we had to support so many locations,” Paul says, “the ability to quickly see which site was having trouble or change a setting across multiple stores was critical. We needed to reduce the time we spent traveling to and from different restaurants.”
3. **Robust Connectivity to Avoid Downtime.** Quick-service restaurants rely heavily on stable internet for POS transactions, kiosk ordering, and even staff clock-in systems. If the network goes offline, sales come to a halt. Five Guys needed a network resilient enough to handle Britain’s varied broadband landscape—from fiber connections in city centers to slower ADSL lines in more remote towns.

**License-Free Platform That Scales.** Five Guys had historically paid annual license fees for enterprise networking gear. Moving to UniFi eliminated recurring software charges, which was a key selling point.

**“In retail, margin is everything,”** Paul says. “When you compare a solution like UniFi to traditional enterprise vendors, you’re not saddled with an ongoing license cost for each device. That alone adds up to real savings across hundreds of stores. And, crucially, the hardware is still robust enough to handle daily restaurant demands.”

“For us, the U6 LR access points are ideal because many stores have tough, kitchen-grade building materials that can reduce signal,” Paul says. “With LR, we can always turn down the power if needed. It’s easier to dial back than to realize you don’t have enough coverage.”

With so many locations, Twilight Zone Engineering relies on UniFi’s Site Manager to see high-level performance at a glance, identify top bandwidth consumers, and quickly spot whether a store’s connectivity is throttled by staff streaming video.

**Built-In Failover with UniFi LTE**
A stable connection is mission-critical to avoid downtime. If a store’s primary connection falters, the UniFi LTE module kicks in. “We get near-zero downtime now,” says Paul. “Previously, if the broadband cut out, the store had to go into offline mode, impacting sales. Now we have dual or even triple redundancy in some places—wired ISP, UniFi LTE, and even Starlink in some cases.”

## The Four-Month Deployment

**Rapid Rollout with No Store Closures.** In the biggest phase, Twilight Zone Engineering migrated 170+ UK sites from mixed legacy gear to a uniform UniFi setup in just four months—without shutting down a single store.

- **Tight Window:** Each store upgrade happened between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., before doors opened.
- **Repeatable Kit:** Each site shipped with a pre-configured UDM Pro, PoE switches, access points, and an LTE unit.
- **Simple Swap:** Existing hardware was removed, UniFi devices installed, and everything tested in less than four hours.

**Nationwide & Europe-Wide Reach**
Five Guys stores are dotted across the UK—from Scotland to Wales, urban centers to suburban retail parks. Twilight Zone Engineering planned an efficient route schedule to handle daily deployments. As each new European market opened (France, Germany, Spain), local teams replicated the UK model, relying on Twilight Zone Engineering for higher-level configuration and troubleshooting.

**Supporting Staff & Delivery Riders**
Beyond POS devices, the network offers a separate VLAN and SSID for delivery riders (e.g., Uber Eats, Deliveroo) who might have poor mobile reception. “They can connect to the store’s Wi-Fi to pick up orders seamlessly,” Paul says. “In turn, that helps the restaurant serve customers faster.”

**Preparing for Future Services**
Five Guys’ corporate offices, also running UniFi, are considering adding UniFi Access for door control and UniFi Protect for security cameras. “We love that the platform is modular,” Paul says. “We can keep the same core gateway and switches, then add cameras or door readers whenever it makes sense, without extra licensing fees.”

**Ongoing Management and Growth**
With more European expansion likely, Twilight Zone Engineering sees UniFi as the long-term standard. Paul notes that it’s easy to plug new stores into the existing Site Manager setup: “Every new location just follows the same blueprint. That’s the beauty of a consistent hardware and software stack.”

Founded in 1808, Mount St. Mary's University is a prestigious private liberal arts Catholic university nestled in the scenic Catoctin Mountains of Emmitsburg, Maryland. Mike Rogers, Director of Network Engineering and Operations, and Sean Smith, Network Administrator, are responsible for managing the complex and expansive IT infrastructure that supports thousands of devices across multiple campuses, including administrative buildings, residence halls, athletic facilities, dining areas, and remote locations.

## Challenges Before UniFi

Previously reliant on Cisco networking equipment, Mount St. Mary's faced significant challenges:

**Complex Management:** Each Cisco device required individual command-line management, making troubleshooting cumbersome and slow.

**High Cost and Procurement Delays:** Vendor-dependent procurement processes were lengthy, delaying critical network upgrades.

**Limited Scalability:** The existing infrastructure struggled to accommodate the growing demands of increased Wi-Fi coverage, device density, and overall bandwidth.

**Diverse Network Needs:** Unique use cases ranging from high-density residential halls to broadcast-quality athletic facilities posed continuous management challenges.

## Why UniFi?

Mount St. Mary's turned to UniFi, attracted by its centralized management, affordability, rapid deployment capabilities, and scalability:

**Single Pane of Glass:** UniFi Site Manager allowed rapid configuration, real-time visibility, and simplified troubleshooting across multiple sites.

**Cost-Effective:** Elimination of costly software licensing fees and simpler procurement processes significantly reduced operational costs.

## Network Architecture and Deployment

Mount St. Mary’s implemented a star hub-and-spoke topology, anchored by EdgeRouter Infinity gateways at their network core:

**Switches:** UniFi Switch Pro 48 and advanced EtherLighting switches, providing improved redundancy, stacking capabilities, and easy management.

**Access Points:** Deployed U6 Enterprise Wi-Fi 6 APs to ensure comprehensive coverage in academic buildings, dormitories, and high-density athletic venues.

**Wireless Backhaul:** Leveraged AirFiber and AirMax for cost-effective, reliable connectivity to remote athletic fields and new campus sites, including the new School of Health Professions located two miles away.

## Real-Life Success: Athletics Broadcasting

A standout project highlighting UniFi's capabilities was the deployment of a comprehensive IP-based broadcasting solution for Mount St. Mary's athletic facilities. The university constructed a professional broadcast studio and equipped multiple athletic venues—some situated in remote fields—with UniFi switches, AirFiber, and AirMax to support live streaming and production.

UniFi enabled seamless IP video production for basketball games, track events, and other sports, with TV networks featuring content from these broadcasts, showcasing UniFi’s capacity to reliably manage high-bandwidth, latency-sensitive applications.
